On the evening of February 17, 1864 four miles off the coast of South Carolina, eight Confederate sailors sat shoulder to shoulder in a four foot hgih space, turning a crankshaft to propel their submerged vessel. Explosives affixed to a shaft protruding from the bow rammed the Union Warship Housatonic, resulting in the first wartime sinking of an enemy ship by a submarine. Minutes later, the H.L. Hunley, pictured on this coverlet, also sank, killing all those aboard.
